History
In the 1998, Prof Li Xiaorong established the Vitreo-Retinal & Ocular Trauma Department, which committed to the vitreous retinal disease of basic and clinical research. In the past 20 years, under the guidance of Prof Li, our department has formed with 15 specialists and nearly 50 beds. The annual operation volume in our department is more than 4,500 cases and the number of professional operations has exceeded 2,000.
Faculty experts and team
Prof Li Xiaorong is the director of Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, the School of Optometry and Ophthalmology and Tianjin Medical University Eye Institute. He is a professor, medical doctor and doctoral supervisor who possesses special government allowance. Since 2003, he has been in charge of five national natural science funds (three of which have been completed), one national Fifteen Key Projects sub-topic, one Foundation for PhD Programs of the Ministry of Education, one Key Project of Science and Technology Support Plan of the Tianjin Science and Technology Commission, one Key Projects of Science and Technology plan, two Popular Science projects and one American Milstein Foundation fund. These projects have won international awards (in prevention and treatment of blindness) twice, third prize in the China Medical Science and Technology Award once, second prize in the Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award once, third prize in the Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award twice, third prize in the Tianjin Natural Science prize once, Science and Technology Achievement Award of Tianjin Medical University once, and was awarded as one of the Top Ten Progress in Ocular Fundus in China in 2015. He has published more than 230 professional papers, including 55 SCI papers (all as corresponding author) and published three papers as corresponding author in IOVS, which is the journal of the highest impact factor in basic ophthalmology research. He owns six national patents and has published 13 books as author or editor. In 2016, he served as the chief editor of Ophthalmology, which is the National Health and Family Planning Commission's 13th Five-year Plan undergraduate textbook. In 2010, he participated in the compilation of Ophthalmology as the deputy chief editor. Since 1998, a total of 83 master's students, 42 doctoral students and 2 postdoctoral students have been supervised. At present, our department has 3 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, 7 attending physicians, 1 resident physician, and a whole team of doctors, including 2 doctoral supervisors, all of whom have overseas study experience.
Clinical work and scientific research
Our department has reached the domestic advanced level in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, macular disease, retinal detachment, eye trauma and other diseases. Meanwhile, the development of cataract phacoemulsification combined with vitrectomy, minimally invasive vitrectomy, vitreous cavity intraocular injection and other advanced surgical methods has been in line with international standards. In recent years, the treatment of diseases such as intraocular tumor, pediatric retina and retinopathy of prematurity has gradually been carried out to achieve full coverage of professional diseases. Our department has been devoted to the application of new clinical technologies and basic research of related applications for many years, especially the application of stem cell therapy in ophthalmology that has promoted the research progress in this field and achieved phased results. Our academic leaders have received many honors and awards, including the Tianjin second and third prizes in Advanced Science and Technology in 2011 and 2016, the Holmes Lecture Award of APAO in 2008, the Susruta Lecture Award of APAO/AAO in 2010, the Chinese Academy of Ophthalmology Award in 2013, and one of the Top Ten Progresses in Ocular Fundus in China in 2015.
